How parrots age
Parrots age quickly in their first couple of years, then slow dramatically. A small parrot matures at six to twelve months; a large macaw may not fully mature until five to seven years. Because large species live so long, their human-year conversion rate drops well below one-to-one in old age. A 20-year-old macaw is comparable to a human in their mid-forties — fully mature and often at the peak of their abilities.
Life stages of a parrot
The chick phase gives way to the juvenile period, then to a long young adulthood and adulthood that can span decades. Behavioral maturity often arrives later than physical maturity, and many parrots become more independent and territorial as they reach full adulthood. The mature and elder phases stretch across the second half of a long life.

Mental enrichment and social interaction are as important to a parrot's wellbeing as physical care; these highly intelligent birds suffer without stimulation. As parrots age, regular veterinary monitoring helps catch the cardiovascular and joint issues that can develop. Diet quality matters enormously — many pet parrots suffer from nutritional problems linked to seed-heavy diets rather than balanced pellets and fresh foods.
Planning for a parrot's long life
Because large parrots can outlive their owners, responsible ownership includes planning for the bird's care beyond your own lifetime. This is one of the most important and least-discussed aspects of keeping a parrot. Lifespan is strongly influenced by diet, enrichment, and veterinary care across the bird's many decades.
