About This Site
Helping exotic pet owners understand their companions
Exotic Pet Age Calculator was created to fill a surprising gap. Dog and cat owners have countless tools for converting their pet's age into human years, but the millions of people who keep rabbits, snakes, geckos, parrots, rats, hedgehogs, and other exotic companions have had almost nothing reliable to turn to. We built this site to change that.
What we do
Our calculator converts the age of seventeen popular exotic pets into approximate human-year equivalents, and — just as importantly — explains what those numbers mean. Knowing that a 2-year-old rat is elderly while a 2-year-old tortoise is barely out of infancy isn't trivia; it directly affects how you should feed, house, and care for your animal. Each species page includes a life-stage breakdown, an age comparison chart, frequently asked questions, and practical care guidance.
How our conversions are calculated
We don't use a single multiplier. Instead, each species is mapped against its real biological milestones — the age at which it reaches maturity, the midpoint of its typical lifespan, and the upper limit of its natural longevity. Because animals age quickly when young and more gradually in adulthood, our conversion rates shift across each animal's life. The figures draw on published veterinary references and species lifespan data, and are designed to be genuinely useful estimates rather than exact biological measurements.
Our commitment to accuracy
Animal aging is an area of ongoing research, and lifespans vary widely depending on breed, genetics, diet, and quality of care. We treat our conversions as well-reasoned approximations and update them as better information becomes available. We always encourage owners to treat their veterinarian as the final authority on their individual pet's health and age.
Who we are
We're a small team of exotic pet enthusiasts who believe better information leads to better-cared-for animals. We keep the site free and supported by advertising so that anyone, anywhere, can use it without barriers. If you'd like to suggest a species we haven't covered yet, or have feedback on our conversions, we'd love to hear from you through our contact page.
