How gerbils age
Gerbils age quickly in their first year, reaching adulthood within a few months. After that, aging settles into a steadier pace. A 3-year-old gerbil is roughly equivalent to a human in their mid-forties — a mature adult heading toward its senior years, since gerbils typically live three to five years.
Life stages of a gerbil
The pup phase covers the first weeks of rapid growth. The junior phase (up to about a year) is highly active. Adulthood (one to two and a half years) is the stable core of life, followed by the mature and senior phases in the animal's final years.
Caring for an aging gerbil
Older gerbils appreciate easy access to food and water and a habitat with plenty of soft bedding for burrowing, which remains an important natural behavior throughout life. Watch for weight changes, reduced activity, and any lumps, and provide gentle handling as they age.
What affects a gerbil's lifespan
Gerbils are highly social and generally live longer, healthier lives when kept in same-sex pairs or small groups; a lone gerbil can become stressed. A spacious habitat with deep bedding for burrowing, a balanced diet, and companionship all support a full lifespan.
