How axolotls age

Axolotls grow steadily through their first two years, reaching full size of nine to twelve inches and sexual maturity by around twelve to eighteen months. Unlike most amphibians, they never undergo metamorphosis โ€” they remain in their larval, gilled form for life, a phenomenon called neoteny. Their aging is moderate: a 5-year-old axolotl is the equivalent of a human around thirty.

Life stages of an axolotl

The larval phase covers the first months of rapid growth. Juveniles continue developing toward adult size. Young adulthood and adulthood (one and a half to ten years) form the long, stable core of an axolotl's life. The mature and senior phases arrive in the animal's second decade for well-kept individuals.

Caring for an aging axolotl

Water quality is everything for an axolotl at any age, but older animals are even less forgiving of poor conditions. Cold, clean water between 60 and 68ยฐF, gentle filtration, and a diet of earthworms or high-quality pellets support a long life. Warm water is a common and serious stressor โ€” temperatures above the low 70s can cause illness and shorten lifespan.

What affects an axolotl's lifespan

Temperature and water quality are the dominant factors. Axolotls thrive in cool, well-maintained aquariums and suffer in warm or dirty water. A soft substrate that won't cause impaction, a low-stress environment, and an appropriate diet all contribute to reaching the upper end of their 10-to-15-year potential.
